About Us

WHO WE ARE?

Children At Risk in Asia (CARA) is a UK-registered charity working to help overlooked children in Asia in two isolated districts along the Thai-Myanmar boarder get the support that they need.

Through our local partner One Sky, a Thai registered Foundation, we  invest in family support services, the systemic development of formal child protection systems and licensed foster care for children in need of safe refuge. They uphold every child’s right to safe, nurturing family-based care rather than institutional care. They also enable access to education and opportunities for family income generation. Through this holistic approach, we aim to give children the safety, stability and opportunities they need to grow up with hope for a brighter future.

Children At Risk in Asia (CARA) is a UK-registered charity helping overlooked children in Asia get the support that they need. We have specifically chosen to direct our focus towards two isolated districts along the Thai-Myanmar border.

Through our local partner  One Sky Foundation we support families, the systemic development of formal child protection systems and licensed foster care for children in need of safe refuge. Like us, they are committed to upholding every child’s right to safe, nurturing family-based care rather than institutional care. They also enable access to education and opportunities for family income generation. Through this holistic approach, we aim to give children the safety, stability and opportunities they need to grow up with hope for a brighter future.

OUR VALUES

IMG_0606.jpg

CARA closely follows the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), choosing to only support projects that reflect these principles.

We believe that children thrive best in a loving family environment, and that institutional care should only ever be considered as a last resort, when all other options have been exhausted.

We do not  promote religious or political agendas, or discriminate in any way on the basis of gender, ethnicity or disability.

WHAT WE DO

MON_4127_edited.jpg

CARA supports causes and projects that match our central objectives in order to ensure their longevity.

These central objectives are to ensure:

  • Overlooked children get safe and nurturing family-based care

  • Unsupported children get an education

  • At-risk children are protected from abuse and exploitation

  • Perpetrators of child abuse are brought to justice

  • Marginalised communities can break free from cycles of entrenched poverty

IMPACT

Education159 copy_edited.jpg

We have contributed to providing thousands of children with a secure family life while having access to an education. Since 2014 to 2026 the school bursaries programme has enabled 3,000 more years of schooling with support – that is, a year of childhood spent attending school and living with their families, instead of either institutional care or children leaving school to be vulnerable to exploitation and abuse.  We are seeing increasing numbers of the children receiving bursaries graduating from high school and going on to further education and reliable employment.

More recently CARA has become the only donor to One Sky’s foster and kinship care. CARA is proud to have contributed to establishing this vital service for children who are at risk.

WHERE WE WORK

Map sangklaburi.jpg

We currently partner exclusively with One Sky Foundation, a registered Thai foundation working in Kanchanaburi province on the Thai–Myanmar border.

One Sky supports disadvantaged ethnic minority and migrant children, many from families displaced by decades of conflict and instability in Myanmar. Their work protects vulnerable children and helps families build towards better futures.

HOW WE SPEND YOUR DONATIONS

IMG_8727.JPG

99% of all donations go directly to our partners in Asia. We keep our UK operating costs exceptionally low thanks to volunteers who provide fundraising and professional services, including accounting and website support. Travel costs for visits to overseas partner organisations are paid personally by CARA trustees, not from donations.

OUR PARTNERS

_RCK0612.jpg

All of our partners are carefully vetted to ensure they share our values and standards. Trustees visit programmes at least once a year, receive detailed six-monthly reports, and oversee delivery through a formal Memorandum of Understanding. This ensures accountability, integrity and confidence for our donors.

We currently partner exclusively with One Sky Foundation, who work to help children stay in school, remove children from dangerous situations and keep families together in the toughest of circumstances.
